About IFI

IFI was founded in Denmark in 1963 to unite and provide discussions of interior design issues within a handful of European countries. During the IFI's existence there has been tremendous growth in membership representing 70 member associations, institutions and schools in 45 countries on every continent. The IFI collectively represents over 65,000 practicing interior designers worldwide.

The International Federation of Interior Architects/ Designers was founded in Denmark in 1963 to unite and provide discussion of Interior Design issues within a handful of European countries. During the IFI's existence there has been tremendous growth in membership representing 70 member associations, institutions and schools in 45 countries on every continent. The IFI collectively represents over 65,000 practising Interior Designers worldwide.

The Core Values of the IFI are to:

  • Promote the Interior Architecture/Design Profession.
  • Represent Interior Architecture/Design Professionals.
  • Assist and facilitate the exchange of professional and cultural information.
  • Encourage international co-operation and business transactions.
  • Provide information on economic political and technical developments.
  • Create an organisation of service to the Interior Architecture/ Design Profession, facilitating industry involvement.
  • Use the Professional skills of Interior Architecture/Design to uplift communities and observe social responsibility.
  • Liaise with other International Design related organisations.

The IFI achieves and upholds these values through concentrating on and developing the following areas:

  • Universal Design - Design for All/Barrier free design.
  • Education - Developing and mentoring young designers.
  • Continuing Education Programmes for practising designers.
  • The Profession - Developing the professional evolution of Interior Architecture/Design including legislative recognition of the profession
  • Pro Vitae - IFI for life - Extending professional skills to areas of social responsibility.
  • WING - World Interiors for a New Generation - Facilitating the growth and ideas of design students and young designers.

The IFI has Secretariats located in Singapore and Montreal and is represented by an elected Board, as well as a component of co-opted Board members who are specialists in their fields. The Board is not remunerated for its IFI duties; however, membership fees are sufficient to maintain an administrative structure, including communication components thereof such as a website, newsletter and promotional material.
